The Ottawa Business Journal wrote an article this week about Jeffrey Dale and his Chairman Advisor role with us and our Chairman’s View service offering. Click here to read about our other Chairman Advisors.

To recap

The goal of Chairman’s View is to get business owners to:

View their companies as an asset

Think like owners (vs. CEOs)

Build their businesses to last decades, but be prepared to sell tomorrow

Why?

M&A companies state that 75% of the 4.2 million private businesses in North America have no economic value. 70% of those businesses need to transition in the next 5-20 years as they are owned by the baby boomers and WW2 generation. Within a short span the market will be diluted with companies that are transitioning, and the question will be how much will a buyer be willing to pay for your company. Only those companies that can demonstrate that their profit is sustainable and transferable without their current owners in charge will be successful.

You can read the article (“The value-killers of businesses on the auction block”) online on page four at: http://obj.newspaperdirect.com/epaper/viewer.aspx

This is perhaps the most fundamental and important question a private company business owner can ask and answer. But unfortunately very few can. In fact the majority of privately-held businesses have little or no economic value in the market, a sobering fact that often comes as an unwelcome surprise when it’s time to sell or transfer ownership. This is because many business owners fall victim to the “Value Trap”, assuming that their past performance (revenue and profit) equals future enterprise value. But, in fact, value is not a measure of past success, but a measure of future potential, and your company’s ability to generate and sustain profits, even without you, the business owner.

Understand that a company’s value is not only based on its financial performance but on its transferable operational capabilities. In other words, can your business thrive without you?

CoreValue™, a standards-based business software and methodology, can help you:

Measure your current business value

Rate your performance against industry standards

Assess your company’s weaknesses to turn them into strengths

Quantify the dollar value of fixing the weaknesses

Define an action plan to increase your business value, and

Measure and track performance improvements

This offers a holistic assessment of your company and will give you a road map to improve its value and take your business where they want to go.

I’m not an entrepreneur, but have been fortunate enough to work in Senior Management positions throughout my career and understand what it means to be putting out fires. Whether it’s not enough growth, too much growth too fast, cash management, customer and supplier issues or employee management, it always seems like there is not enough hours in the day to get your work done plus grow the business.

But here’s what I’ve learned: If you can stop chasing small fires and focus your efforts on extinguishing the entire forest fire instead, you can begin to recapture some of that elusive time.

There are a couple of ways to get there: Burn out or ask for help.

We work with business owners and their teams to put out the fires and, instead, reignite their passion for building a valuable business. Through our Chairman’s View process, we’re able to help them identify key areas to focus their efforts to improve the performance and value of their companies.

All successful companies should have:

Clear definition of why you are or why you should be successful (Documented personal and business goals, Clearly articulated elevator pitch, Defined competitive advantage, Strategic plan)

Timely and reliable financial and operational reporting to base business decisions

Robust and documented sales process

Ability to deliver repeatedly on your promise to the market

Policies and procedures in place to look after your number one resource – employees

Do have them in place?

For more information about how we can help you extinguish the fires permanently, please contact me at: cenman@w-group.com
